Baseball Opens Series with 8-3 Victory Over Maryland Eastern Shore

ROCK HILL, S.C. – Winthrop baseball (1-5) won its sixth-straight home-opening game with an 8-3 victory over Maryland Eastern Shore (0-1) to open the three-game series Friday afternoon. The Eagles would jump on top early with home runs from Matthew Mulkey and Hunter Lipscomb and overall eight Winthrop student-athletes would record hits.

"I thought we played well in all three facets tonight," said head coach Tom Riginos. "It was a good stepping stone from where we've been this past week. I thought we got better tonight and that's what we're looking to do each game."
 
NOTABLES
- Sophomore starting pitcher Zach Peek earned the win, allowing just one run on two hits in 6.2 innings of work.
-Junior Hunter Lipscomb hit his first home run of the season, a three-run bomb over the right field fence that put the Eagles up 5-0 in the bottom of the 3rd.
-Freshman DH Dillon Morton continued his strong plate performance with a 3-for-4 day at the plate with 1 RBI. Morton is hitting .500 on the season, collecting six hits on just 12 at bats.

Game 2 of the series with Maryland Eastern Shore is set for Sat., Feb. 24 with first pitch set for 3 p.m.
