Eagles Fall 56-39 At James Madison Sunday

Box Score HARRISONBURG, VA – Big runs for James Madison propelled the Dukes past the Winthrop women's basketball team 56-39 Sunday afternoon.

Winthrop falls to 1-5 on the season with the loss while James Madison improves to 4-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Courtney Hagaman gave Winthrop an early 3-0 lead and the Eagles continued to lead at 5-2 before the Dukes went on a 16-1 run to open an 18-6 lead with 3:41 left in the opening quarter.  Winthrop trailed 23-12 after 10 minutes of play. 

The Eagles looked to pull some momentum early in the second quarter, cutting the James Madison lead to nine just over two minutes into the period.  The Dukes weathered the Eagle offense, closing the half on a 7-4 run and took a 35-22 lead into the break.

Winthrop's offense went cold in the third quarter.  The Eagles hit their first field goal attempt 21 seconds into the second half and then didn't hit another field goal over the rest of the third quarter.  James Madison went on a 13-0 run and Winthrop's only other three points came at the free-throw line.  The Dukes held a 50-27 lead heading into the final 10 minutes.

The Eagles had another strong start to the fourth quarter and outplayed the Dukes over the last 10 minutes for the deficit was too much to overcome.  Winthrop outscored JMU 12-6 in the final quarter before falling 56-39.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Anika Riley led the Eagles with eight points and added four rebounds.  Kem Nwabdu led the team with five rebounds and added seven points.  Winthrop shot 31 percent from the field on 16-of-52 shooting but connected on only one of nine three-point attempts.  James Madison dominated the rebounding battle 50-27.

WHAT'S UP NEXT
Winthrop will now prepare for an in-state matchup against the College of Charleston Cougars Thursday night at 6:30 p.m. in Charleston.
