Men's Soccer Set To Host USC Upstate Wednesday Evening

Eagles Have Won Three Straight Home Games

ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop men's soccer looks to rebound at home Wednesday evening when it welcomes USC Upstate to Eagle Field at 7 p.m.

COOK IT UP!!!
There will be a cookout for all students prior to kickoff of the men's soccer game. The cookout will be located just inside the front gates, toward the Irwin Belk Track. There will be free hot dogs and hamburgers as well as a corn hole tournament with prizes for the winners. The shuttle bus will begin picking up on campus at 6 p.m.       

SERIES HISTORY VERSUS USC UPSTATE
Winthrop and USC Upstate meet for the 15th time and the all-time series is even at 7-7. The last meeting came in 2015 as the Eagles traveled to Spartanburg and dropped an exciting contest, 5-4. The Eagles had won the previous four meetings and are 5-2 against the Spartans in meetings on Eagle Field.      
  
A GLANCE AT THE EAGLES
Winthrop is coming off a tough loss at Davidson last Saturday in which it allowed two goals in the final 20 minutes. The game-winning goal came in the 86th minute off a set piece. Both of the losses for the Eagles have come in the final five minutes of the game. The Eagles are currently riding a three-game winning streak at Eagle Field.  

A GLANCE AT THE SPARTANS
After starting off 0-3 the Spartans have won two straight. The season began with three straight road games as USC Upstate was outscored 7-2, but have a 5-3 goal advantage in the last two games with wins over Liberty and Wofford at home. Cam Philpot and J.R. Cozine lead the team with two goals each while Philpot has a team-high five points. Three goalies have seen time, but the majority of the minute have been logged by Santiago Restrepo as he is 1-2 with four appearances. However, C.J. Cluck and Brady Moody split time in the win over Wofford on Sept. 9.
 
HASENSTAB TABBED BIG SOUTH ATTACKING PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Following his hat trick in the win over Wofford on Sunday, Max Hasenstab was named the Big South Attacking Player of the Week. It was his third career hat trick and the third time in his career to capture the honor.     
 
HASENSTAB ONE OF NATION'S TOP SCORING THREATS
Redshirt senior Max Hasenstab has had a decorated career and enters the 2017 season among some of the NCAA Division I active scoring leaders. Hasenstab entered the season third among active players with 1.67 points per game and has moved to 2nd at 1.69 per game. He is now two goals ahead of Maryland's Gordon Wild for the most goals for an active player with 38. He began the year 3rd in goals per game at .71 and has increased that to .73 (3rd). He is a three-time All-Big South selection and the 2015 Big South Conference Tournament MVP. He has 88 career points, which ranks 1st among active players and is 8th all-time in Winthrop history.
 
WHAT'S AHEAD
The Eagles will be back on the road when they head down to Atlanta, GA to take on Georgia State on Saturday, Sept. 16 at 7 p.m.
 
BIG SOUTH PRESEASON POLL
Winthrop was picked fifth in the Big South Preseason Poll as it was tied with Campbell with 45 votes. The Eagles captured their final two league games of 2016, but did not advance to the conference tournament. Winthrop and Campbell were just seven votes behind Longwood in 4th. The Highlanders received 7-of-9 first-place votes while High Point was picked second and Liberty third.
