Women's Basketball Closes Out 2017 With Road Games at Mercer and Tennessee Tech

ROCK HILL, SC – The Winthrop women's basketball team will look to finish off 2017 on a positive note as it closes out the year with two road contests at Mercer Sunday and Tennessee Tech Tuesday.

EAGLES AT A GLANCE
Winthrop suffered a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Wofford Terriers last Saturday before falling on the road to the 14th-ranked Duke Blue Devils on Sunday.  Against the Terriers, the Eagles got double-digit scoring performances from four different players.  Kayla Brown led the Eagles with 16 points and currently leads the team, averaging 11.5 points per game.  Brown also had a team-high 12 points against Duke,
 
Anika Riley tallied her first career double-double against Wofford with 12 points and 10 rebounds and is second on the team with 5.2 boards per game.  Ronata Rogers, who had eight points and seven rebounds against Wofford, currently leads the team in rebounding, averaging 7.7 boards per game.
 
SCOUTING MERCER
Mercer enters Sunday afternoon's contest with an 8-2 overall record and is currently riding a five-game winning streak.  The Bears have downed fellow Big South foes Campbell and UNC Asheville during their win streak.
 
The Bears are led by a pair of upperclassmen who are averaging double digits this season.  Senior Khalia Lawrence leads the team averaging 18.1 points per game while junior KeKe Calloway has averaged 12.7 points per contest.  Junior Amanda Thompson leads the team with 7.4 rebounds per game.
 
As a team, the Bears are scoring more than 65 points per game while allowing fewer than 57 per contest.  Mercer is averaging more than 10 steals per game while blocking three shots per game.
 
ALL-TIME AGAINST MERCER
This will be the 12th all-time meeting between the Bears and Eagles with Mercer holding an 8-3 series lead.  The two teams met in the Winthrop Coliseum last season with Mercer going home with a 71-48 victory.  The last Winthrop win came at home on December 30, 2003 as the Eagles downed the Bears 71-61.
 
SCOUTING TENNESSEE TECH
The Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles are 2-7 on the season with victories coming over Tennessee Wesleyan and Cumberland.  Tennessee Tech will be coming off a nine-day break when it hosts Winthrop Tuesday.
 
The Golden Eagles have two players who are averaging double-figures in scoring this season.  Senior Yaktavia Hickson and freshman Kesha Brady are averaging 10.9 and 10.8 points per game respectively.  They are both also tied for the team lead in rebounds, averaging 4.8 boards per contest.
 
ALL-TIME AGAINST TENNESSEE TECH
The Eagles are winless all-time in five previous meetings with the Golden Eagles.  Tennessee Tech came to the Winthrop Coliseum last season and left with a 73-50 win. 
 
WHAT'S UP NEXT
The Eagles will be off from competition until the new year when they open conference play.  Winthrop will travel to Radford on January 2 before hosting Campbell on January 6.

Every Thursday at The Roasting Company throughout the basketball season will be the Winthrop Sports Show at ROCO hosted by the voices of the Winthrop Eagles Dave Friedman and Mike Pacheco. The two will sit down weekly with head coaches Pat Kelsey and Lynette Woodard as well as other selected guests throughout the season. The show is from 6-6:30 p.m. and also airs on 94.3 FM & 104.1 The Bridge.
