EAGLES AT A GLANCE
Winthrop will have a lot of new faces on and off the court as the Eagles start the season Friday. Head coach Lynette Woodard begins her first full year of head coaching duties after leading the Eagles in the final four games of last season. She will be joined on the bench by coaching newcomers Kevin Lynum, Tesia Harris and Tobias Pinson.
On the court, Winthrop will have to replace a lot of scoring that is gone from last year's squad. The Eagles return only 42 percent of the scoring from last season. In the post, Winthrop returns sophomores Angela Coello Perez and Uchechi Ufochukwu. Marissa Cantrell and Naima Jackson return to help lead the Eagles at the guard position.
Junior transfer Courtney Hagaman will hopefully add a scoring threat from the guard spot. Hagaman averaged more than 30 points per game last season for Ocean County College. Airneisha Gamble and Kayla Brown will also help add depth at the guard spot. Zaria McBride redshirted last year with the Eagles and she will look to help Winthrop in the post this season.
SCOUTING ELON
The Elon Phoenix are the reigning Colonial Athletic Association champions and earned an 11-seed in last year's NCAA Tournament, falling 75-62 to West Virginia in the opening round. The Phoenix ended last year with a 27-7 overall mark.
Elon returns its top scorer from last season, Shay Burnett. Burnett averaged 12.3 points per game, appearing in all 34 contests last season. Burnett also led the team in rebounding, pulling down 7.3 boards per game. Malaya Johnson is the next leading returner for the Phoenix as she averaged 9.1 points per game last season.
ALL-TIME AGAINST ELON
Elon was a member of the Big South until 2003 and the Eagles and Phoenix have previously met 18 times, with the series tied at 8-8. The two sides last met in March of 2003 with Elon knocking the Eagles out of the conference tournament 73-61.
SCOUTING DUQUESNE
Duquesne finished last season with an 18-16 overall record and earned a bid to the Women's NIT. The Dukes will open their season Friday evening at UNC Charlotte.
The Dukes are returning more than 75 percent of their scoring output from last season. Chassidy Omogrosso returns as the team's leading scorer, averaging 13.7 points per game. Duquesne did lose the team's second-leading scorer and leading rebounder Amadea Szamosi who pulled down more than eight rebounds per game last season.
ALL-TIME AGAINST DUQUESNE
This will be the first-ever meeting between Duquesne and Winthrop.
WHAT'S UP NEXT
Winthrop will remain at home following the opening weekend to host North Carolina Wesleyan at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
