ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop men's basketball looks for a fourth straight road when it takes on High Point Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. in the Millis Center.
The Eagles are coming off their first conference loss as they enter the contest 9-4 overall and 1-1 in the league. High Point is also coming off a loss at home to Longwood as it is 7-7 on the year and 1-1 in the Big South. The game will air on the Big South Network or fans can tune into 104.1 The Bridge as Dave Friedman and Mike Pacheco will call the action.
The loss to Radford ended a home winning streak against league opponents at seven games, but the Eagles are working on a road winning streak. A win at High Point would give the Eagles a fourth straight win on the road, which hasn't been accomplished by a Winthrop team since the 2006-07 and 2007-08 squads combined to win nine in a row. Since the program became an NCAA D1 member in 1985-86 there have been only five instances where an Eagle team won four or more straight road games in the same season.
The loss to the Highlanders overshadowed
Keon Johnson's 37-point effort as he was 12-for-26 from the field and 10-for-11 at the free throw line. Johnson became the first ever Eagle men's basketball player to score 37 points in a game. There have been several 30-point games in the history of the program, but nobody ever went for 37. His performance was the second best in program history for a Big South home game as only David McMahan has more with 42 points against Coastal Carolina on Jan. 15, 1996. It was the 7
th 30-point game of his career as he now leads the team with 20.9 ppg, which ranks second in the Big South and 29
th nationally.
Junior
Duby Okeke became the program's all-time leading shot blocker as he had four blocks against Radford and now has 142 in his career. That passes the old mark of 139 set by Billy Houston. In his last three games, Okeke has 11 blocks and is second in the league with 1.84 per game.
Xavier Cooks is second on the Eagles in scoring at 15.9 per game and is also second on the team in blocks with 1.77 per game. Cooks has 124 career blocks and is well on his way to surpass Houston into second place all-time.
The Eagles continue to lead the league in scoring at 78.7 ppg and are second in free throw percentage at .734. The team ranks first in field goal percentage defense and second in three-point field goal percentage defense.
Winthrop and High Point meet for the 40
th time as the Eagles hold a 26-13 lead in the all-time series. The Eagles are 19-13 against the Panthers in regular season games and have dropped eight of the last 10 meetings. Winthrop's last three trips to the Millis Center have come down to the final possession as it has lost by a combined four points in those three games. The two teams split the season series last year with each winning on its home court.
The Panthers are also looking to bounce back after their first league loss, 60-55 at home vs. Longwood. They are led by a trio of players averaging double-figures as Andre Fox leads the way with 13.4 ppg. Miles Bowman Jr. is second with 12.9 ppg and Anthony Lindauer is third with 10.4.
The last time Bowman Jr. faced the Eagles he went for 15 points and 11 rebounds in 24 minutes off the bench to lead the Panthers to an 87-85 win in the Millis Center. He is coming off 17 points and nine rebounds in the loss to Longwood. He is second in the Big South in rebounding at 8.7 per game and 13
th in scoring. In the Big South opener Bowman Jr. had a team-high 21 points in the win at Gardner-Webb.
Fox is 11
th in the Big South in scoring and has led HPU in scoring in six games this season. He led the team in scoring in five of the team's first six games of the season. Lindauer is a three-point threat having made 29 on the season at 45 percent. He has 12 in his last four games (12-for-24) and has been in double-figures all four games.
The Panthers have the top shooting team behind the arc in the Big South at 40 percent and rank second in scoring defense at 67.8 per game. In their last five games they've averaged 69.4 ppg while allowing 61.6 and are 3-2 in those games.
