Volleyball Downs Davidson 3-0 Saturday For Season's First Victory

Box Score

WILMINGTON, NC – The Winthrop volleyball team picked up its first victory of the year, sweeping past the Davidson Wildcats Saturday afternoon at the UNCW Courtyard by Marriott Classic.

The first set was a back-and-forth battle with both sides having chances to earn the set victory.  Davidson held a slim lead early but after a 13-13 tie, the Eagles went on a 9-3 run, taking a 22-16 lead and taking the first set 25-22.

Davidson again had an early lead in the second set but Winthrop was able to make a strong charge.  The two sides were tied at 12-12 but the Wildcats were only able to manage six more points in the set as the Eagles won 25-18.

Winthrop (1-2) led throughout in the third set and while Davidson stayed within striking distance they couldn't close the game enough to overtake the Eagles as Winthrop won the third set 25-21.

Lourdes Rosario had another strong outing for the Eagles as she finished with 14 kills and a .312 attack percentage.  Sydney Gunter recorded another double-digit kill outing, finishing with 10 kills.  Siani Yamaguchi led Winthrop with 36 assists while Carlie Skelton tallied 16 digs.

The Eagles will take the next week off from competition before heading to Columbia, SC next Friday to participate in Carolina Classic against in-state foes Furman, Clemson and the host Gamecocks.
