Box Score BOILING SPRINGS, NC— Winthrop salvaged Game 3 after dropping the first two of the series to Gardner-Webb in a 7-4 come from behind triumph at John Henry Moss Stadium Saturday afternoon.
With the win, Winthrop closes the regular season with a 28-25 (12-12 BSC) record, while Gardner-Webb falls to 36-19 (14-10 BSC). The Eagles will be the No. 6 seed and will face No. 3 Longwood in the first round of the 2016 Big South Championship Tournament next Tuesday in Lexington, SC.
Winthrop struck first in the top of the 3rd scoring on a Tyler Asbill single to third base, knocking in Jace Whitley who reached earlier on a bunt.
Babe Thomas gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead with a solo home run in the top of the 7th.
Gardner-Webb would rally for four hits scoring four runs in the bottom of the 7th to seize the 4-2 lead.
Winthrop exploded for five runs on five hits and two errors from Gardner-Webb in the top of the 9th. Roger Gonzalez started the rally with a singly through the left side. Mark Lowrie then doubled to send Gonzalez home. Mitch Spires then reached on a throwing error by the Bulldogs' pitcher and Lowrie was able to score. After Whitley was walked, he later scored on a passed ball. Brandon Fite hit a single to right field scoring Kyle Edwards. Anthony Paulsen then knocked in Asbill.
Winthrop's defense and bullpen held strong for the 7-4 final.
The Eagles' starter Zach Sightler pitched 6.2 innings allowing only four hits and two earned runs. Sightler now has a .400 ERA for the season. Zach Cook was credited with the win and is now 3-3 on the year with a 3.63 ERA.
