Winthrop Drops 12-3 Decision to Longwood Saturday

ROCK HILL, SC— The Winthrop Eagles lost 12-3 in Game 2 of their weekend series against Longwood at Winthrop Ballpark Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, Winthrop is now 26-23 (10-10 BSC) on the season, while Longwood improves to 30-21 (14-9 BSC).

The Lancers struck first scoring two runs in the top of the 1st on four hits.

Longwood stretched to a 4-0 lead in the top of the 2nd when they once again scored another two runs on four hits.

The Lancers exploded for seven runs in the top of the 3rd connecting with ten hits for an 11-0 lead.

Longwood struck for another run in the top of the 4th for a 12-0 lead.

Winthrop finally got on the board in the bottom of the 7th when Derron Davis doubled to score Babe Thomas, who had been walked earlier in the inning.

The Eagles continued to cut in to the deficit in the bottom of the 8th when Brandon Fite singled to right field scoring Matthew Mulkey who had doubled earlier in the inning.  Kyle Edwards was later walked with the bases loaded scoring Mattison Pike.

Winthrop was unable to rally in the 9th and lost in a 12-3 final.

Winthrop's starting pitcher Thad Harris earned the loss pitching 2.1 innings.  Harris is now 6-4 on the season.

The Eagles will conclude the weekend series in Game 3 against Longwood Sunday, May 15, at Winthrop Ballpark beginning at 2:00 pm.  This will be Winthrop's final home game of the season; Senior Day ceremony will begin roughly 20 minutes before first pitch.
