Cooper, Mills Win Titles; Others Turn In All-Big South Perfomances at Outdoor Track & Field Championships

Cooper Claims Third Straight Hammer Title at 2016 Outdoor Championships
LYNCHBURG, VA—Winthrop All-American Marthaline Cooper captured her third straight hammer title and sophomore distance runner Kevin Mills finished strong to win the 3,000 meter steeplechase to lead the Eagle men and women after the first two days of the 2016 Big South Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships being held at Matthes-Hopkins Complex on the campus of Liberty University.
 
Through two days of the three-day event, the Winthrop men are third in the team standings while the women are in fourth place heading into Thursday's final day of competition.
 
Cooper won the women's hammer title by 3.5 meters as she reached 61.53 meters with her fourth throw of the day.  Mills claimed his first conference steeplechase title with a time of 9:11.58.
 
Earlier on Wednesday, multi-athlete Cullen Barringer shattered the men's school decathlon record as he finished third with 6,140 points.  The previous record was 6,009 set 14 years ago by Bernard Wheeler.  Joining Barringer on the awards podium was women's distance runner Tristan Langley who finished third in the 3,000 meter steeplechase with a time of 11:07.59, a men's long jumper Quemell Brave, who took third place with a leap of 7.37 meters.
 
Other top finishers included fourth place finishes by Tori Waddington in the women's javelin (39.22m) and Taryn DeLeon, heptathlon (4,456 points), and fifth place finishes by Mike Hajduk in the hammer (50.93m), Matt Thompson, discus (47.62m), and Gabriela Boatwright, discus (42.45m).
