SERIES HISTORYWinthrop and Radford meet for the second time this season and the second time in a two-week span. The Eagles won the first meeting 87-77 at the Winthrop Coliseum, but the Highlanders still own a 35-33 lead in the all-time series and 32-26 advantage in regular season league meetings only. Winthrop is looking for its first regular season sweep of the Highlanders since 2011-12. That is also the last time the Eagles won at the Demon Center.
THE LAST TIME THESE TWO METJimmy Gavin scored a game-high 29 points to lead Winthrop to an 87-77 win. Gavin hit five threes as the Eagles finished with 10 as a team and shot 50 percent in the game from the floor. Both teams shot well in the first half with Radford shooting 57 percent and the Eagles shooting 54 percent, but Winthrop held a 48-42 lead at the break. The Eagles held Radford to 1-for-7 shooting behind the arc in the second half and went on to win its seventh straight win at the time. A big key for the Eagles was the difference at the foul line as Winthrop was 29-for-40 and Radford was 6-for-11.
THE MATCHUPBoth teams are coming off victories on Thursday night and this is a key matchup for both as most, if not all of the remaining games are as the regular season is coming to a close. Winthrop is a half game back of UNC Asheville for first place and Radford is sitting seventh, a half-game behind Gardner-Webb for sixth and just a game back of Liberty and High Point in fourth. Winthrop bounced back from its first loss since early January to defeat Longwood. The Eagles have now won 8-of-9 games and are looking toward beginning another win streak in an arena they've suffered a loss in four of their last five trips. Winthrop posted 88 points in the win over Longwood, which is the 10
th straight game scoring 70 or more points. Winthrop has scored 80 or more in six of those games and continues to lead the league in scoring at 82.3. The Eagles also top the league in field goal percentage and are second in free throw percentage. In the Eagles last three road games, they've won two of the contests by double-figures as they overcame double-figure deficits in both. One key to success for the Eagles on the road is hitting the 70-point mark as they are 13-4 under
Pat Kelsey in regular season league games on the road when doing so. The Eagles are 1-15 in league road games when scoring fewer than 70 points. Radford ended a two-game skid with its win at UNC Asheville Thursday night and has now won four of the last six games. Radford ranks sixth in the league in offense (73.4 ppg) and fifth in scoring defense (72.3). The Highlanders are also fourth in the league in field goal percentage defense and three-point field goal percentage defense.
PLAYERS TO WATCHJimmy Gavin is coming off a 25-point performance in the win over Longwood and in the first meeting with Radford he had 29 points. The Eagles are 9-1 in games that Gavin scores 20 or more points. In the last five games he's averaging 19.6 points while shooting 50 percent from the floor and 43 percent behind the arc.
Keon Johnson is coming off a 10-point performance against Longwood as he was 2-for-11 from the field. That is exactly what he was in the first meeting with Radford but he battled his way to the free throw line and was 10-for-13 on his way to 16 points. Freshman
Bjorn Broman has only five double-figure games this season, but in the first meeting with Radford he was 4-for-5 from the field, 3-for-4 behind the arc and 4-for-4 at the foul line for 14 points. Winthrop is 8-2 in games that Broman has multiple steals. Cameron Jones and Rashun Davis lead Radford in scoring with 14 ppg. Jones and Davis are both threats behind the arc but Jones has double the amount of threes than Davis with 62 at a 40 percent clip. Jones has his league average up to 15.9 ppg and Davis is scoring 13.3 ppg. In the first meeting, Brandon Holcomb scored a career-high 18 points on 9-for-10 shooting while Davis finished with 15 points and Jones added 13.
LAST TIME OUTJimmy Gavin scored a game-high 25 points and
Xavier Cooks had a double-double with 20 points and 12 boards to lead Winthrop to a hard fought 88-80 victory over Longwood. The Eagles fell behind 77-76 with 3:48 to play in the game, but Gavin reeled off eight straight points to help the team earn the win down the stretch. The Eagles made 16 threes, one shy of the school record in which they tied earlier this season against Charleston Southern. Winthrop was 9-for-17 from three in the second half alone. The Eagles were aggressive on the glass as they ripped down 15 offensive boards that led to a 19-9 advantage on second-chance points.
THE COACHESPat Kelsey is in his fourth season at the helm of the Winthrop men's basketball program. He holds a record of 70-50 in four seasons with appearances in the Big South championship game the past two seasons. The Eagles are 37-26 in Big South games under Kelsey. He's currently ranked 15
th nationally for career wins for head coaches 40 years of age and under. During his tenure the team has a couple of the program's notable victories with wins at Clemson and Auburn and has made back-to-back trips to the Big South Conference Tournament Final. Radford is coached by Mike Jones, who is in his 5
th season. He has an overall record of 77-81 at Radford and 38-43 in league games but the last two seasons the team has won 22 games overall and 10 or more league games each season.
MILESTONESJunior
Keon Johnson continues to climb the all-time scoring list as he became the 13
th player in the history of the program to reach 1,200 career points. He now has 1,230 and is 13
th all-time, just 15 points away from 12
th place and 23 from 11
th. In his career he's averaging 14.0 ppg and if he were to maintain that average for the remainder of his career (estimation of at least 36 games to play) he would finish with over 1,700 points, which only one player in school history have achieved. He is the third player to reach 1,000 career points in
Pat Kelsey's four years (
Keon Moore/
A. Smith). Johnson moved into the Top 10 for free throws made and three-pointers made. He is among the top free throw shooters in the history of the program as he's currently shooting .833 in his career, which ranks 5th all-time. He's currently 8th all-time in made threes with 179.
Duby Okeke is averaging 2.7 blocks per game, which leads the Big South and ranks in the Top 10 in the nation. In 21 games he's blocked 57 shots and the program record for blocks in a season is 66 by Josh Grant in 2002-03. Okeke moved into 5
th all-time with 103 career blocks and
Xavier Cooks has 82 (ranked 10
th all-time). Billy Houston is the all-time leader in career blocks with 139. Okeke has a career-high 57 blocks this year, which ranks 2nd best for a single-season.
