ROCK HILL, SC-- Winthrop men's basketball returns home to take on Greensboro College, Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m. in the Winthrop Coliseum.
The Eagles are 4-3 on the year and following Tuesday's game they will have 10 days until their next game as they break for final exams of the fall semester. The game will air on the Big South Network or fans can listen to Dave Friedman with the play-by-play on 104.1 The Bridge.
Winthrop is coming off an 83-67 loss at Dayton on Dec. 3 and returns home to the Winthrop Coliseum where it has won 22-of-24 games and 26 of the last 30. So far this year the Eagles are 2-1 at home and won a thriller in their last home game on Nov. 30 with an overtime last second victory over Furman.
Offensively the Eagles are led by senior
Keon Johnson (17.5 ppg) and junior
Xavier Cooks (17.4 ppg). Johnson is coming off a 24-point performance at Dayton as he was 7-for-18 from the field and a perfect 8-for-8 at the foul line. Cooks managed 14 points and four rebounds as he was 6-for-10 from the floor.
Through seven games the Eagles are averaging 73.6 points while allowing 73.3. The team is shooting 43 percent from the floor and 32 percent from three. Winthrop is tops in the Big South in free throw shooting at 74 percent.
It's been 30 years since Winthrop and Greensboro College have squared off. The Eagles hosted Greensboro College on Dec. 8, 1986 in a 75-44 victory in their only meeting. Winthrop is looking for its 46
th straight victory over a non-D1 opponent.
The Pride enter the game at 3-2 and have won two in a row. It will be the second Div. I opponent for the Pride this season as they started the year with a 67-50 loss to North Carolina A&T.
Three players in double-figures lead a Greensboro College offense averaging 80.6 points per game behind 9.0 threes per game. Donavan Griffith leads the team with 14.2 ppg, Joseph Gatling is scoring 13.4 per game and Darus Maddox averages 10.6.
Griffith has led the team in scoring in three games and is coming off 16 points in the win over Bob Jones. Gatling turned in a season-high in points for the Pride with 26 in the win over Shenandoah.
