FSU Preview By Dave Friedman
ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop goes for three straight wins to open the 2016-17 season when it heads to Florida State for a 7 p.m. matchup on Friday, Nov. 18.
The Eagles are coming off a 94-81 road win at Manhattan College Tuesday morning and are 2-0 on the season. It is the fourth straight season the Eagles have opened the year 2-0. The game will air on the ACC Network Extra. However, the game will not air on 104.1 The Bridge due to a high number of area high schools in the state playoffs for football so the broadcast will be internet only through www.winthropeagles.com. The link is available on the main page under event calendar along with the links for live stats and video.
The Eagles earned the double-figure victory on the road by playing unselfish and knocking down free throws as they were able to handle the Jaspers pressure. Winthrop assisted on 20 of its 24 field goals and was 36-for-42 at the foul line. The 20 assists were the most by the Eagles under
Pat Kelsey against a D1 opponent.
Through the first two games the Eagles are averaging 80 points per game while shooting 44 percent from the floor and 84 percent at the foul line. The team also dropped in 10 threes against the Jaspers, which was the 34
th time a Kelsey team has done that.
So far it's been a balanced offense as four players are averaging double-figures led by senior
Joshua Davenport's 15.0 per game. Senior
Keon Johnson and junior
Xavier Cooks are averaging 13.5 points while senior
Roderick Perkins is scoring 10.0 per game.
The Seminoles are also off to a 2-0 start with wins over Charleston Southern and Iona and received votes in both the AP Top 25 and USA Today Coaches Poll.
Sophomore Dwayne Bacon paces four players in double-figure scoring at 16.5 per game. He's 5-for-10 behind the arc and 8-for-9 from the foul line in two games. Freshman Jonathan Isaac is averaging 15.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals while shooting 63 percent from the floor. Junior Xavier Rathan-Mayes is scoring 10.5 per game and sophomore Terance Mann is scoring 10.0 per game. A big advantage the Seminoles have created for themselves in the first two games is on the glass where they have a +13 margin. Bacon and Mann each lead the team with 6.0 rebounds per game.
This is the first time the Eagles have ever taken on the Seminoles and it will mark the 41
st meeting against an opponent from the ACC. Winthrop's last win over an ACC foe came in Clemson, SC in 2014 against the Tigers, 77-74.
