HIGH POINT, NC -- The Winthrop volleyball team won its third straight match Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 sweep of the High Point Panthers.
The Eagles improved to 3-9 in the Big South and 12-16 overall while High Point fell to 17-8 overall and 8-4 in the conference.
High Point was able to grab the early lead in the first set, leading by as much as six at 15-9. Winthrop battled back to tie the set at 17-17. The Eagles reached set point at 24 - 23, and after the Panthers tied the set, Winthrop took the final two points to win 26-24.
The two sides were even through the first 20 points of the second set before Winthrop was able to pull away slightly at 14-10. High Point rallied and was able to tie the set at 17-17. The Panthers and Eagles traded points and were still tied at 22, before Winthrop was able to take three of the last four points for the 25-23 win.
In another tight set, the two sides the two sides were never more than 3 points apart. Despite the close score, the Eagles never relinquished a lead. Winthrop won the third set 25-22.
Emma Weakland and Sammie-Jo Ah-Hong led the Eagles offensively, finishing with 13 and 10 kills respectively. Siani Yamaguchi finished with a double-double, totaling 20 assists and 11 digs while Carlie Skelton led the team with 13 digs.Â
Winthrop will have the next week off before heading to Charleston, SC on Saturday, November 5 for a 6 p.m. contest against the Charleston Southern Buccaneers.
