NORTH CHARLESTON, SC -- The Winthrop volleyball team won its fourth straight Big South contest Saturday evening with a 3-0 sweep of Charleston Southern.
The Eagles improved to 4-9 in the Big South and 13-16 overall while Charleston Southern fell to 12-18 overall and 7-7 in the conference.
Both sides struggled offensively in the opening set which made for a competitive, back-and-forth affair. Neither squad was able to amass more than a three-point lead. The Eagles trailed 23-21 before rallying for the final four points to win the first set 25-23.
Winthrop grabbed the early lead in the second set but the Buccaneers rallied to tie the set at 10-10. The Eagles responded and slowly pulled away with a lead. Winthrop went up 21-16 and went on to take the set 25-19.
Another back-and-forth battle ensued in the third set and through 20 points the teams were still even. Winthrop then eased away from Charleston Southern and grabbed a 20-15 advantage. The Buccaneers then rallied to tie the set at 23-23 but the Eagles were able to take the last two points for the 25-23 win.
Brianna Gray led the Eagles with 10 kills while Emma Weakland added eight. Siani Yamaguchi notched a double-double with 17 assists and 10 digs. Carlie Skelton led the team with 17 digs.
Winthrop closes out its regular season road schedule on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. contest at Gardner-Webb.
