BUIES CREEK, NC -- The Winthrop volleyball team overcame a two-set deficit Friday evening to down the Campbell Camels 3-2 for its second straight conference victory.
Emma Weakland led the Eagles with 21 kills while Sammie-Jo Ah-Hong added 15. Sydney Gunter tallied 11 kills and Kelsey Schroll contributed 10 kills. Siani Yamaguchi notched a double-double with 39 assists and 10 digs and Carlie Skelton led the team with 23 digs.
Campbell pulled out to an early lead 9-2 in the first set. Winthrop was unable to mount any sort of challenge to the Camels in the opening set, falling 25-18.
The second set was a much closer affair as the two sides were tied at 9-9 through the first 18 points. Campbell then started to slowly pull away from the Eagles and took the second set 25-19.
Winthrop was able to find its groove in another tight third set. In a back-and-forth battle neither side was able to amass more than a three-point edge. The Eagles found themselves down 22-21 before rallying to take the final four points to take the set 25-22.
The Eagles carried the momentum into the final two sets. In the fourth set, after a close opening, Winthrop was able to slowly pull away from the Camels, taking the fourth set 25-15. In the shortened fifth set, the Eagles were able to slowly ease away and take the set 15-7.
Winthrop returns to the court on Saturday for a 4 p.m. road contest against the High Point Panthers.
