RADFORD, VA – The Winthrop women's basketball team had only one player score in double-figures Saturday afternoon as the Eagles fell 66-44 on the road to the Radford Highlanders.
Junior Erica Williams recorded 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists for the Eagles who fall to 2-12 overall and 1-4 in conference play. Gaby Gilmore and Janayla White each tallied 18 points to lead the Highlanders to their third conference victory, improving to 3-2 and 7-7 overall.
Winthrop led for only five minutes in the contest, all coming in the first quarter. The Highlanders held a slim 15-14 lead after the opening 10 minutes.
Radford outscored the Eagles 20-7 in the second quarter including a 10-2 run which opened a 28-18 lead for the Highlanders. Radford was also able to close the quarter on a 7-1 run, to take a 35-21 lead into halftime.
The Eagles tried to cut into the Highlander lead, but were struggling to get points to come from anywhere other than the charity stripe.
Winthrop scored 12 points in the third quarter with half of them coming from the free-throw line. Radford outscored the Eagles 17-12 in the third, taking a 52-33 lead into the final quarter. The Eagles were unable to make a charge in the fourth quarter, falling 66-44.
Ronata Rogers tied Williams for the team lead with eight rebounds and added five points. Naima Jackson scored six points while Ezinne Mbamalu and Nuba Jackson each tallied five points.
The Eagles will return to the court on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they host the Presbyterian College Blue Hose at the Winthrop Coliseum.
