ROCK HILL, SC -- Winthrop will be looking to snap a five-game losing streak and improve its Big South Conference record to 2-3 this afternoon when the Eagles face Radford at 2 p.m. in the Dedmon Center. Winthrop is coming off a 63-60 home loss last Saturday against Longwood.
A LOOK AT THE MATCHUP
Winthrop is facing a Radford Highlanders team that is 5-1 in the Dedmon Center and 6-7 overall. The Highlanders are coming off a 64-53 win last Monday night over Presbyterian that evened their Big South record at 2-2. The Eagles and Highlanders have not played a common conference or non-conference opponent this season. Radford enters the game as the best defensive team in the conference as it allows 56.5 points a game against the lowest scoring offensive team in Winthrop which comes in averaging 54.2.
THE SERIES HISTORY
Winthrop and Radford are meeting for the 71st time today. The Highlanders own a commanding 54-16 lead in the series, but Winthrop has won four of the last five games. all during Coach Kevin Cook's tenure.
BACK IN ACTION
Erica Williams, the Eagles' leading scorer with a 15.0 average, could be available today after missing the last two games with a foot injury.
STEPPING UP
Without Williams in the lineup, two Eagle sophomores picked up the scoring and rebounding slack. Point guard Jimecheia Banks has had back-to-back career scoring highs (12 and 13) and Ronata Rogers has recorded a career-high in points against Asheville (11) and a career-high in rebounds (15) vs. Longwood.
NEWEST ADDITION TO 1,000-POINT CLUB
Erica Williams became the 18th player in Winthrop women's history to reach 1,000 career points with her 17-point effort at Duke on Nov. 15. She now has 1,142 points. She needs 32 more points to break into Winthrop's career top 10 list.
KILPATRICK BRINGS THE "D"
Redshirt junior guard Aliyah Kilpatrick is showing why she is regarded as one of the best perimeter defenders in the Big South. She comes into the game ranked second in the nation and first in the conference in total steals (53) and steals per game (4.8). She has made 27 steals in the last four games, including a career-high 10 at Charleston. She needs two more steals to reach 200 for her career.
QUEEN OF SWAT
Freshman center Arianne Whitaker is coming off a career-high 8 blocked shots against Longwood. She is ranked 13th nationally in blocked shots with 34 and 25th in blocks per game with a 2.62 average, tying her for first in conference.
