JoJo Taylor netted the game winning goal at the 82
nd minute mark to lift the Winthrop Lady Eagles to a thrilling 2-1 victory over Francis Marion Thursday night at Eagle Field.
This was the home opener for the Lady Eagles and was a match in which they controlled the tempo the majority of the night. Not only winning the time of possession, Winthrop outshot Francis Marion 23-2.
Winthrop had plenty of scoring opportunities in the opening 45 minutes but wasn't able to connect and the first half ended in a scoreless tie. Junior
Emily Crick gave Winthrop an early second half lead when she knocked one in at the 48 minute mark. Sophomore
Courtney McLeod was credited with the assist.
"We came out a little slow tonight but I think this goal helped us get on track and heading in the right direction," said Crick. "I feel like it provided us with some momentum that we were able to sustain for the remainder of the match."
Less than three minutes later, Francis Marion came roaring back when Kelly Anthony curved one past
Caroline Duncan into the top right corner of the goal. This goal resulted from a free kick about 10 yards outside the box at the 50 minute mark.
The match looked to be heading to overtime when Taylor stepped up and kicked in the game winner. Taylor has a team leading two goals on the season, having also netted a goal in the season opener last week at Western Carolina.
Winthrop, 1-0-1, continues its home stand by hosting the Charlotte 49ers next Wednesday, September 2 at 7:00 p.m. at Eagle Field.
