Winthrop extends its conference winning streak to 12 games and improve to 36-17 overall and 15-8 in the conference. Longwood drops to 21-31 and 9-14 in Big South action.
Freddie Sultan earned the win, allowing two runs on three hits in three innings after starter
Matt Crohan held the Lancers to just one hit in the first four innings. Luke Simpson took the loss, giving up four runs on eight hits in four innings.
Anthony Paulsen went 5-5 at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored.
The Eagles jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first inning. Back to back singles put
Brad Kaczka and Paulsen in the corners and Kaczka crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by
Mark Lowrie.
John Menken was hit by a pitch to move Paulsen to second before Paulsen came home on a single up the middle by
Babe Thomas. Menken moved to third on the play and scored on a double to right center by
Jace Whitley.
Winthrop pushed the advantage to 6-2 heading into eighth inning by scoring a run in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings.
Tyler Asbill led off the eighth inning being hit by a pitch, stealing second and advancing to third on a single by Paulsen. Asbill and Paulsen scored on back to back singles by Lowrie and Menken before Thomas loaded the bases with a single to center field. Whitley drove home Lowrie and Menken on a single through the left side that moved Thomas to third.
Thomas scored on a wild pitch that advanced Whitley to second and Whitley was brought home by a single to right center by
Mitch Spires.
Kyle Edwards reached on fielder's choice but Spires was able to get to third on a throwing error by the shortstop. Spires crossed the plate on a wild pitch as Asbill walked. Asbill was thrown out at second and Edwards moved to third as Kaczka reached on fielder's choice before Edwards scored on a passed ball. Kaczka finished out the scoring for the Eagles coming home from third on a single through the right side by Paulsen.
The Lancers avoided the shutout by scoring two runs in the seventh inning on a home run by Kyri Washington.
Longwood got one more run back in the bottom of the eighth as Connar Bastiach came home on the throw to second on a fielder's choice by Alex Lewis.
Winthrop will look to sweep the Lancers during Saturday afternoon's game at 1:00 p.m.
