John Menken hit the game-tying triple and scored the go- ahead run in the top of the ninth inning to lift the Winthrop baseball team past Longwood 2-1 on Thursday night.
The Eagles are now 36-17 and extend their conference winning streak to eleven games, while moving to 14-8 in Big South action. The Lancers drop to 21-30 and 9-12 in conference play.
Travis Shelley earned the win, holding the Lancers to just one hit in the final 1 1/3 innings.
Sam Kmiec and Micheal Green combined to allow just one run on three hits in the first 7 2/3 innings. Travis Burnette took the loss, giving up both runs on one hit in 2 1/3 innings.
After being held to just two hits in the first eight innings, Menken tripled to right center field to bring home
Jake Sullivan, after coming in to pinch run for
Mark Lowrie who had walked. Menken then scored the game winner on a wild pitch. Shelley struck out two out of the final three batters to get the win.
Longwood took the lead in the seventh inning as C.J. Roth crossed the plate from third on a throwing error by Menken. Roth singled, stole second and advanced to third on a throwing error on a failed pickoff attempt by Green.
The two teams continue the series on Friday night at 6:00 p.m. in Farmville
