Eagles Kick Off Series Against Charleston Southern with 9-2 Win

CHARLESTON, SC- The Winthrop baseball team extends its winning streak to eight straight, the longest since 2007, with a 9-2 win over Charleston Southern on Friday night.

With the win, the Eagles improve 30-14 overall and 8-8 in the Big South. The win streak is the longest for head coach Tom Riginos and the longest since winning eight straight in 2007. The Bucs fall to 20-19 on the year and 9-7 in conference play.

Because of inclement weather, Saturday's game has been moved to 11:00 A.M.

Sam Kmiec earned the win, going eight innings and allowing two runs on nine hits while striking out ten. Andrew Tomasovich took the loss, surrendering five runs on five hits in six innings.

Mark Lowrie went 3-5 at the plate, with an RBI and one run scored.

Lowrie hit a solo home run to left field in the second inning to put the Eagles up 1-0.

The Eagles then exploded to a four-run fifth inning while capitalizing on three CSU errors. Roger Gonzalez walked and advanced to second on a single by Chad Smith. Kyle Edwards singled and advanced to second on a throwing error by shortstop Cole Murphy that scored Gonzalez and moved Smith to third. Tyler Asbill reached and advanced to second on a throwing error by the third baseman that Smith was able to come home on before another throwing error by the first baseman scored Edwards. Asbill crossed the plate on a single through the left side by Brad Kaczka.

The Bucs two runs both came in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brian Dye doubled to left field and was knocked home on a single by Chris Singleton. Singleton advanced to third on a double by Chase Shelton before coming home on a Murphy grounded out.

Winthrop increased the lead to 7-2 with two runs in the seventh. Asbill crossed the plate on a double by Anthony Paulsen after reaching on fielder's choice and advancing to second on a walk by Kaczka. Kaczka scored from third on a wild pitch by Kyle Dyson.

The Eagles tacked on two more runs in the ninth inning. Paulsen singled, Jace Whitley was hit by a pitch and Lowrie singled to load the bases with one out with Paulsen and Whitley coming home on a single up the middle by Gonzalez.
