Winthrop Commemorates 20th Anniversary Of 1995 NCAA Baseball Appearance

The 1995 Team Was The First Winthrop Team To Earn A Bid To An NCAA Tournament

ROCK HILL, SC--Several members of the 1995 Winthrop baseball team that captured the Big South Conference title to earn the school's first NCAA Tournament appearance were recognized on Saturday during the 20th Anniversary ceremony between games of the Eagles' doubleheader sweep of UNC Asheville.

The returning players and their families were given a tour of The Winthrop Ballpark, treated to a barbeque meal, and then threw out the ceremonial first pitches prior to the second game. 

11206The 1995 baseball team, which was led by head coach Joe Hudak, finished the season with a 41-17-2 record and placed third in the NCAA East Regional at Clemson.  The team earned the bid to the tournament by winning the regular season Big South championship with an 18-6 record.  Winthrop closed out that season strong by winning 26 of its 33 games and then knocking off Coppin State in a best-of-three-game play-in to advance to Clemson.  Winthrop was nearly unbeatable at home, going 24-5 at Eagle Field, the foreunner to what is now the site of The Winthrop Ballpark.

The Eagles were led on the mound by senior All-American southpaw Bryan Link, who finished the season with a 12-3 record that included regular season wins over Auburn, Mississippi State and South Carolina, and a 4-0 shutout of Alabama in the first game of the NCAA Regional.  Left hander David Peek was 7-2 that year while  right hander Mike Condon finished at 8-5 on the mound. The Eagles fielded a potent offensive attack that season as seven hitters batted above .300 and the team finished the year with a .306 average.  The leading hitters were centerfielder Tony Costantino who batted .379 and first baseman Jeremy Keller who hit .359 and hit .529 in the NCAA Regional. 

The members of the 27-player roster plus the coaching staff included: Jim Abbott (RHP) Scott Bradshaw (OF, catcher), Jeff Cisar (SS), John Coble (OF), Joe Colameco (OF), Mike Condon (RHP), Tony Costantino (OF), Tom Derwin (2B), Bryan Dunn (C), Eric Frye (LHP), Scott Harmon (RHP), Bryson Herron (OF), Eric Horton (LHP), Travis Hollingsworth (3B), Jeremy Keller (1B), Vinnie Kirkpatrick (OF)  Rick Kobsik (1B), Ryan Lambert (LHP), Bryan Link (LHP), Marc Lubioto (LHP), Jeff Maree (OF), Jason Martin (1B), David Peek (LHP), Jamie Singer  (C), Chris Wilson (RHP), Page Wofford (RHP), Garret Zohner (OF). The assistant coaches on Hudak's staff were Gary Murphy and John Danko.
