www.winthropphotos.comROCK HILL, SC- The Winthrop baseball team will go up against High Point in a three-game conference series at The Winthrop Ballpark. Because of the Easter Holiday, the games are scheduled for Thursday at 6:00 p.m., Friday at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
The Eagles (19-10, 2-4 Big South) are looking to build upon their two-game winning streak and transfer some of their success in the non-conference schedule to the Big South. After six games, Winthrop is ranked eighth in the conference overall while its team batting and team pitching are both fourth. The Winthrop pitching staff has an overall ERA of 3.71, captained by weekend starters
Sam Kmiec and
Matt Crohan. Crohan is fourth in the Big South in individual pitching, 2.00 ERA over seven starts, while Kmiec leads the conference in strikeouts with 53 and is sixth in innings pitched with 42.1.
Head coach
Tom Riginos expects a really good series with the conference foe. "High Point is playing really well right now," says the skipper. "I just want our guys to go out and compete, win every pitch and just worry about the next 200 feet."
High Point (14-13, 4-2 Big South) has one eight of out the last 11 games despite most recently falling the Appalachian State 3-8. The Panthers are currently fourth in the Big South rankings, taking two out three games against Campbell and Longwood. Freshmen Hunter Lee and Carson Jackson are the Panthers' leading hitters, combining for a .342 batting average. 62 hits and 29 RBI. High Point's pitchers have the second lowest ERA in the conference, 3.58.
This is head coach Craig Cozart's seventh season at High Point, where he has compiled an overall record of 380-188.
