Eagle Baseball Team Survive UMES Rally To Claim 4-3 Win on Sunday

Winthrop Completes Weekend Sweep And Improves Record To 10-4

ROCK HILL, SC- John Menken and Anthony Paulsen came up with the key extra base hits and Joey Strain earned his fifth save of the season as Winthrop completed its sweep over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore 4-3 at The Winthrop Ballpark on Sunday.

With the win, the Eagles improve to 10-4 on the year, while the UMES Hawks drop to 2-10.

Starter Matt Crohan earned his first win of the year and improves to 1-1 this season.  He allowed just two hits and no runs in six innings. Travis Shelley pitched two innings, giving up one run on three hits before Strain came on in the ninth to close out the game. He surrendered two runs on three hits.  Jordan Bone took the loss for the Hawks, going 3.2 innings while allowing five hits and three runs.

Winthrop opened the scoring in the first inning when Babe Thomas singled and came around to score on a triple by Paulsen.

The Eagles tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second inning. With one out, Brad Kaczka walked and advanced to third on a single by Chad Smith. Kaczka scored on a Kyle Edwards ground out to the shortstop. Smith moved around to third and scored on a single by Tyler Asbill to close out the Winthrop scoring.

The lead was pushed to four in the fifth inning as Mark Lowrie crossed the plate on an RBI double by Menken. 

The Hawks rallied late in the game, scoring one run in the eighth inning and two more in the ninth. Connor Breslin started the comeback as he scored from third on a throwing error by first baseman Clay Altman.  The final two runs came with two outs in the ninth inning. Skylar Murray was hit by a pitch before the Hawks banged out three straight singles to plate two runs before Strain struck out Travis Carden for the final out of the game.

Winthrop continues its eight-game home stand with North Carolina A&T on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. followed by The Citadel on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m.
