ROCK HILL, SC- Sophomore Anthony Paulsen drove home the game's only run with a double in the sixth inning to send the Winthrop baseball team to a 1-0 victory over UMES on Saturday.

Winthrop jumps to 9-4 on the year while the Hawks fall to 2-9.

Paulsen got two hits in three at bats, with the game's lone RBI, while the Eagles' defense allowed the Hawks to reach third base just once in nine innings.

Zach Sightler earned his third straight win, pitching eight innings while allowing just three hits. Joey Strain came in to close out the game in the ninth inning, registering two strike outs, to get his fourth save this season. Chipper Smith took the loss for UMES, giving up the lone run on five hits in six innings.

After five and a half scoreless innings, the Eagles were able to break the tie. With one out, Tyler Asbill walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Smith. Asbill advanced to third as Babe Thomas fouled out and scored on Paulsen's double to right field.

The Hawks' best opportunity came in the fifth inning when they got runners in the corners with no outs. However, on the next at bat, Skylar Murray grounded out to Sightler who threw the ball to second for the force out and Murray was called out on runner's interference on the throw from second to first. Sightler then struck out Jamison Trower to retire the side.

The series' finale is scheduled for Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at The Winthrop Ballpark.
