Box Score Box ScoreROCK HILL, SC- Sam Kmiec allowed just one hit in seven innings to earn the victory in the Winthrop baseball team's 10-2 win over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Friday night.
The Eagles improve to 8-4 on the year while the Hawks drop to 2-8.
Kmiec struck out 10 and walked just two to get his second win in three starts. Reliever
Carson Gregory pitched the final two innings, giving up two runs on four hits. Hawks' starter Jesse Stinnett allowed seven runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings to drop to 0-3 on the year.
Winthrop batters combined for a season high 17 hits, led by shortstop
Kyle Edwards who went 3-4 with two RBIs.
The Eagles took a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning off three straight doubles by
Anthony Paulsen,
Mark Lowrie and
Roger Gonzalez. Lowrie crossed the plate again in the third inning, scoring on a triple by
John Menken after singling.
Winthrop added four runs in the fourth inning, sending eight batters to the plate. Paulsen led off the inning with his second double of the game. After two straight outs, Menken was hit by a pitch and both runners advanced on a passed ball. Brad Kazcka singled to score both runners and Kaczka was able to advance to second on the throw home.
Mitch Spires drove home Kaczka on a double to left field.
Winthrop extended its lead to 10 with three runs in the seventh inning. Menken crossed the plate as Spires reached on fielder's choice after a lead-off single. Edwards doubled to score Spires and Edwards was able to reach third on the throw. Edwards was brought home on a sacrifice fly by
Jace Whitley.
The Hawks scored once in each of the final two innings. Connor Breslin scored from third as Travis Carden grounded out in the eighth followed by a solo home run by Greg Turlik in the ninth.
 The Eagles continue the series with UMES on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
