Box Score Box Score ROCK HILL, SC- The Winthrop baseball team couldn't overcome an early 9-0 deficit as it fell to USC- Upstate 12-3 on Wednesday evening.
The loss snaps a four game winning streak for the Eagles, who fall to 7-4, while the Spartans move to 5-5.
Freshman
Riley Arnone suffered the loss in his first collegiate start as he allowed six runs on four hits in 2/3 of an inning. Five more Winthrop pitchers combined to concede six runs on eleven hits.
Freddie Sultan pitched the game high three frames for the Eagles, and held the Spartans to just one hit while registering three strikeouts.
The Eagles scored all three runs in the fourth inning on singles from the heart of the lineup.
Babe Thomas led off the inning with a triple and was brought home on a single by
Anthony Paulsen.
Mark Lowrie singled to advance Paulsen to second and
Roger Gonzalez drove both runners home with a single to centerfield.
USC Upstate exploded for six runs in the first inning with three coming off a home run by junior Cody Brittain.
The Spartans pushed their advantage to 9-0 in the third inning. Erik Samples knocked home a run on a double to right field followed by a triple by James Fowlkes to score Samples. After a pitching change, Fowlkes crossed the plate on a passed ball.
After being halted by Sultan for three innings, the Spartans tacked on three more runs off pitchers
Justin Pace and
Michael Gilroy in the eighth inning.
Winthrop returns home to host the University of Maryland- Eastern Shore in a three game weekend series. Games are scheduled for Friday at 4:00 p.m., Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
