Matt Crohan held the Chanticleers to just one hit in eight innings in the Winthrop baseball team's 3-0 win over Coastal Carolina on Sunday afternoon.
The Eagles improve to 18-10 this season and 2- 4 in the Big South. The loss snaps an 11-game winning streak for the Chanticleers who move to 20-7 and take their first conference loss of 2015.
In the longest start of his career, Crohan walked just three while striking out 12.
Travis Shelley came in to close in the ninth inning and gave up one hit. Coastal Carolina's Zach Hopeck took the loss, allowing one run on six hits.
The Eagles combined for nine hits with
Mitch Spires going 3-5.
Tyler Asbill went 1-5 on the day with 1 RBI and scored two runs. Anthony Marks had both hits for The Chanticleers, both singles, coming in the sixth and ninth innings.
Winthrop took a 1-0 in the third inning as
Tyler Asbill scored on a bases loaded single to left field by
Roger Gonzalez. Asbill led off the inning reaching on an error by second baseman Connor Owings and advanced to third on back to back singles by
Mitch Spires and
Anthony Paulsen.
Babe Thomas doubled the lead in the fourth inning, coming home on a double by Asbill after singling and moving to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Kyle Edwards.
The Eagles pushed the advantage to 3-0 with a run in the sixth inning. Asbill reached on fielder's choice as Edwards was thrown out at second after walking. Asbill then stole second, advanced to third on a single by Spires and crossed the plate on a fielding error by Owings.
The Eagles return home to play Davidson on Tuesday night at 6:30 p.m. before hosting High Point in a three-game series. Because of the Easter holiday, the games will begin on Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
