Eagles Start Two Game Road Trip with Clemson on Tuesday, Before Taking on USC Upstate on Wednesday

Rock Hill, SC- The Winthrop baseball team will face its first road tests this week, taking on Clemson on Tuesday evening at 5:00 p.m. before traveling to Spartanburg to battle USC-Upstate on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.

The Eagles (6-3) are coming off a very successful weekend, sweeping Jacksonville in a three game weekend series. Juniors Anthony Paulsen and Brad Kaczka lead the team in hits, 12 and 10 respectively. Shortstop Kyle Edwards went 3-10 against Jacksonville, including one home and four RBIs, and tops the team with 10 RBIs in just nine games. Mark Lowrie jumped atop the Eagles rankings in batting average, .385, and has tied his career record for hits in a single game (2) and RBIs in a single game (2). Josh Strong, a projected mid-week starter, is 1-0 so far this season and allowed two runs on three hits.

After losing their opening series against West Virginia, the Tigers went on a five game winning streak including an 11-4 win against #10 South Carolina. Although the Gamecocks downed Clemson on Saturday, the Tigers fought back to win the series with a 7-0 win on Monday afternoon. Tyler Crigger has started all nine games for Clemson and is currently ranked 15th in the nation in batting average (5.15). The junior infielder has 17 hits so far this season, with eight RBIs. Head Coach Jack Leggett, whom Eagles' coach Tom Riginos served as an assistant coach under, is in the 21st season, and has compiled a record of 929-454-1.

USC Upstate (4-5) is on a three game winning streak as it swept St. Joseph's in its three game weekend series this past weekend. Sophomore Zach Krider leads the Spartans' offense in hits (13), runs (9), doubles (3) and is tied with junior Jake Beaver in home runs with two. Freshman Charlie Carpenter has driven home 12 runs on eight hits.

The Spartans are coached by Matt Fincher, who has in his 18 years at USC Upstate garnered a record of 394-544-0.
