ROCK HILL, SC—Senior
Jordi Lluch and junior
Max Hasenstab have been named CoSIDA Academic All-Americans, announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America Tuesday afternoon.
Lluch and Hasenstab are both starters for the men's soccer team and helped lead them to a Big South Conference Championship and NCAA College Cup appearance. Both were named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Second Team. The duo becomes the fourth and fifth players in the program's history to be named to a CoSIDA Academic All-America Team. It's also the first time that two players in the same season were selected.
Lluch maintains a 3.63 grade point average with a double major in biology and economics. He enjoyed one of his finest seasons of his Eagle career this past season both defensively and offensively. The defender out of Mataro', Spain anchored an Eagle defense that recorded seven shutouts, including four of the last five games of the season. After going three seasons without a goal, Lluch did more than make up for that as he finished the year with the most goals by a defender in the program's history for a season (11). The two-time All-Big South First Team selection currently ranks 45
th nationally in scoring and 21
st in total goals. On Nov. 2 Lluch was named to College Soccer News National Team of the Week as well as being named the Big South Conference Attacking Player of the Week. Lluch leaves Winthrop as a two-time Big South champion and the only player in the program history to be named to the Big South All-Tournament Team four times.
Hasenstab is seeking a degree in environmental studies and holds a 3.80 GPA. The Idstein, Germany native scored a career-high 13 goals while helping the Eagles to a Big South Conference Championship. He earned Big South Conference Most Valuable Player honors by capping off the championship with the deciding penalty in the championship game shootout against High Point. Hasenstab reached 13 goals on the year in the conference semifinals with a hat trick against Campbell, the second hat trick of his career in conference tournament action. For his efforts in the conference tournament he was named to the College Soccer News and Top Drawer Soccer National Teams of the Week. The 2013 Big South Freshman of the Year and three-time All-Big South selection currently ranks 5
th nationally in goals per game, 7
th in total goals and 9
th in scoring.
Lluch and Hasenstab were eligible for the CoSIDA Academic All-America Teams after being voted to the Academic All-District Team. They join Matt Horn (2011), Alex Isern (2012) and Achille Obougou (2013) on the Winthrop men's soccer short list to receive this honor.
Later this month the NSCAA Academic Awards will be announced as Lluch, Hasenstab and teammate
Magnus Thorsson (NSCAA Academic All-Region selection) could be chosen.
