Box Score Radford, VA—The Winthrop Lady Eagles' soccer squad tied 1-1 at Radford Saturday night at Cupp Stadium.
The opening five minutes of the half was a defensive struggle as both teams attempted to feel one another out and gain possession. The first scoring opportunity came in the 6
th minute when
Taylor Walton was able to get behind the defense for a breakaway but could not beat the Highlanders' goalkeeper Katie McCormick.
The Lady Eagles had another chance in the 23
rd minute when
Lauren Watts almost sent one in the bottom corner of the net off of a free kick. The half ended in a 0-0 deadlock; with Radford outshooting Winthrop 9-5.
Both squads came out gunning for a goal in the second half. Radford was able to take the lead in the 69
th minute when Jordan Rad Lundin scored with a shot from about 30 yards out. Winthrop attempted to respond with a flurry of five shots over the next 10 minutes but couldn't connect.
After a foul was called against the Highlanders with one minute remaining in the match,
Macey Bosley scored a 90
th minute equalizer, assisted by
Lauren Watts and
Megan David, to force overtime.
Taylor Walton nearly scored another game winner in the first minute of overtime but sent the ball over the crossbar. Winthrop dominated possession in the first period of overtime and outshot Radford 7-1.
Samantha Prytulak almost ended the game in the 98
th minute when she ripped a shot inside the box but McCormick was able to come up with the save.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the second period of overtime and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
Winthrop, 5-8-3 (2-5-2 BSC), will return home to conclude regular season this Tuesday, Oct. 27 against Presbyterian College beginning at 6:00 pm.
