ROCK HILL, SC— The Winthrop women's soccer team opened up Big South Conference action with a 3-0 home loss to Gardner-Webb, Wednesday night at Eagle Field.
The loss drops the Eagles to 3-4 on the year while Gardner-Webb improves to 4-5 overall.

Gardner-Webb scored two first half goals less than two minutes apart to hold a 2-0 lead at the half. The first goal came at the 27th minute when Shelby Hooe sent a through ball over the top of the Winthrop defense as Sydney David ran on. At the same time Winthrop goalkeeper Amelia Henderson tried to beat David to the ball near the top of the box but David was a step quicker and her shot slipped by Henderson into the goal.

The second goal came in the 29th minute as Gardner-Webb continued to apply pressure offensively. The ball was played into the box on a corner right in front of Henderson. The ball popped around and was headed toward the goal as a Winthrop defender came to the clear the ball off the line. However, a number of Runnin' Bulldogs crashed the net and Jane Perrin Mayer jumped in the way of the clearance to redirect the ball into the net.

Gardner-Webb's third goal came in the 86th minute by David, her second of the game. A ball was served into the box as Henderson and a Gardner-Webb player raced for the 50/50 ball and as they met the ball squirted out wide to David who had a wide open net as she slotted it home.

Winthrop had the first good scoring chance of the game as Grace Radler was set up from about eight yards out straight on from goal in the 21st minute. Radler ripped a shot first time but Krista Chauvin guess the right way and made the diving save and gathered the loose ball on the ground.

The Eagles had a couple more quality chances to get on the scoreboard but Chauvin would not allow anything by as she made six saves to earn the shutout. Both of those opportunities coming after the third goal as Courtney McLeod and Lauren Kelly tested Chauvin from distance as she made diving saves on each. Henderson finished with seven saves.

The Eagles head to Farmville, VA this Saturday to take on Longwood at 7:00 p.m.
