Baseball Falls Short in 8-6 Loss to Charleston Southern

Box Score CHARLESTON, SC- A three run home run was the difference in the Winthrop baseball team's 8-6 loss to Charleston Southern Friday night. The Eagles dropped to 22-28 and 12-10 in conference action while the Buccaneers improved to 27-21 and 9-12 in Big South play.

The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning as Babe Thomas hammered his first collegiate home run to bring himself and T.J. Olesczuk home. The Bucs would answer back, however, with a four run bottom fourth inning.

Winthrop tied the game in the sixth inning with runs from Cody Dolan and Olesczuk. Dolan hit a single and came home on an RBI double by Olesczuk. Olesczuk was advanced to third on a single by Thomas and scored on a sacrifice fly by John Menken.

Chad Smith led off the seventh inning getting hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a single by Brad Kaczka. A sacrifice bunt by Kyle Edwards advanced the runners and Smith scored as Leighton Daniels reached on fielder's choice but Kaczka was thrown out at third. Dolan then stepped up and hit a single, advancing Daniels to second, before Olesczuk hit his second RBI of the night to bring Daniels home and the score to 6-4.

Chase Shelton hit a three run home run in the seventh inning, after Kevin Hickey crossed the plate on an RBI single by Alex Tomasovich, to bring the final to 8-6.
