Box Score ROCK HILL, SC- The 2014 Winthrop baseball season came to a close with a 9-1 loss to Campbell in the Big South Conference Tournament Championship game. The Eagles finish with a record of 27-33 while Campbell improves to 40-19 and earns an automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals which get underway at 16 sites on May 30.
Winthrop's lone run was scored in the bottom of the third after
Leighton Daniels reached on fielder's choice and was brought home by T.J. Olesczuk's 19th double of the year.
Sophomore
Sam Kmiec took the loss for the Eagles, giving up six runs on ten hits while Campbell's Hector Cedano took the win, giving up one run on seven hits.
Head coach
Tom Riginos said that he was happy with all his team had done this year, especially in the last three weeks of the season. "I'm extremely proud of our players. They did an outstanding job in the tournament. This is something to build on. The seniors this year worked very hard and this run doesn't happen without them."
Campbell jumped on the board in the top of the first to take the 3-0 lead. Steven Leonard led the inning off with a single to center field. John Reilly bunted Leonard over with a sacrifice. Leonard stole third and came home on a double to right field by Matt Nadolski. Two batters later, Will Albertson scored Nadolski with a double to right center. Seth LaRue followed with a single to bring Albertson around.
The Camels tacked on a run in the top of the second to push their lead to 4-0. Elijah Trail led the inning off with a single to right center and Clayton Brown drew a walk to put runners on first and second. Brooks Borders laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Trail and Brown. Leonard plated Trail with a sacrifice fly to right field. Campbell scored a run in the top half of the seventh to extend its lead to 5-1. Brown singled up the middle. Borders moved him up 90 feet with a sacrifice bunt. Reilly plated Brown with a single to center field.
The Camels pushed four runs across in the top of the eighth to increase the lead to 9-1. Nadolski led the inning off with a single. Matt Parrish moved Nadolski up to second on a bunt single. Nadolski moved up to third on the throwing error trying to get Nadolski at first. Drew Butler came in to pinch run for Parrish. Nadolski scored on a passed ball. Albertson pushed Butler to third on a sacrifice fly. A base hit by Trail brought Butler home. A two RBI double by Borders cleared the bases.
