Eagles Claim South Division Title With 5-2 Win Over Longwood On Senior Day

Box Score ROCK HILL, SC- John Menken hit a home run and drove in four runs to help lead the Winthrop baseball team past Longwood 5-2 on Saturday afternoon to clinch the 2014 Big South Conference South Division title and earn the league's second seed in next week's championship tournament.

With the win, Winthrop finished the regular season with an overall record of 24-32 and a 14-13  Big South mark while Longwood's season came to a close with a 22-33 record and -17 in conference play.

Josh Strong got his first win of the season, giving up two runs on nine hits in 7.1 innings before Jason Driver came in to close out the game and earn his third save of the year. Longwood's Mitchell Kuebbing took the loss, giving up three runs on five hits.

Babe Thomas started off the scoring for the Eagles in the fourth inning with his third home run of the year. Leighton Daniels hit a single and Menken slammed his second home run of the year with a man on to give Winthrop a 3-0 lead. Longwood got one run back in the eighth inning, but Menken knocked in Thomas who had reached on an error and Cody Dolan who singled to give the Eagles a 5-1 advantage. .

Longwood made it 5-2 in the ninth inning with an RBI single by Alex Lewis.

The Winthrop Ballpark will host the 2014 Big South Conference Tournament next week, beginning Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. when #2 seed Winthrop will face #7 seed Charleston Southern.
