Baseball Splits Double Header, Winning 4-3 Before Falling 10-6 to Longwood

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 ROCK HILL, SC- The Winthrop baseball team split its conference double header with Longwood taking the first game 4-3 before dropping the second game 10-6. The Eagles are now 23-32 on the year and 13-13 in Big South action while the Lancers move to 22-32 and were eliminated from any chance of making next week's Big South Tournament as they fall to 9-17 in conference play.

Game 1- Cody Dolan reached on an error from the third baseman as Tyler Asbill scored the game winner to take the first game of the double header 4-3.

Jason Driver earned the win for the Eagles to improve to 5-5 despite giving up a game-tying home run in the top of the ninth. Mitchell Kuebbing gave up one run on one hit as he took the loss.

The game went through five scoreless innings before Babe Thomas hit a two run home run to bring himself and Cody Dolan home. Thomas made it a 3-0 game in the eighth inning after walking, stealing second and advancing to third on a throwing error by the catcher.  He scored on a squeeze bunt by Chad Smith to give the Eagles what appeared to be a security run, but the Lancers came up with three runs in the ninth after being down to their final out of the game. Scott Burkett took Driver deep with a dramatic three-run homer to left center to tie it at 3-3.  It was the third homer of the season for Burkett, and the team's first home run since April 19 at VMI.

Winthrop bounced back in the bottom of the ninth to score the game-winning run thanks to a fielding error by the Lancer third baseman with two out.  The Eagles got the run after Tyler Asbill  reached on a leadoff single.  He advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then went to third on a wild pitch before crossing the plate when Dolan's sharp grounder to the third baseman was mishandled. The loss eliminated Longwood from its slim hopes of earning a spot in next week's Big South Conference Tournament.

Game 2- Despite a five run third inning and getting twelve hits, Longwood scored ten runs on fifteen hits to take the win.

John Menken hit a home run in the second inning to get Winthrop on the board. Babe Thomas led off the third inning with a walk followed by a single by Dolan with both advancing on a passed ball. Mark Lowrie then hit a single to bring Thomas home and advance Dolan to third. Menken reached on fielder's choice that advanced Lowrie to second as Dolan was thrown out at home. Smith walked to load the bases and Lowrie crossed the plate on a passed ball. Micheal Patrick then hit a triple to bring Menken and Smith home and the score to 6-5.

The Lancers would fight back to score three runs in the fourth inning and two runs in the seventh inning.

Brock Goodling took the loss for the Eagles, giving up three runs on two hits while Longwood's Travis Burnette earned the win holding the Eagles to just four hits. Longwood's Devin Gould came in to close, earning his second save, giving up just two hits in five innings.

The two teams will play Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at The Winthrop Ballpark with Senior Day honors taking place prior to the first pitch.
