Box Score CHARLOTTE, NC- Despite coming back from being 3-0 down in the first inning, the Winthrop baseball team suffered a hard fought 5-4 loss to Charlotte on Tuesday night. The Eagles are now 22-31 on the year while Charlotte improved to 18-29-1.
Jason Driver took the loss for the Eagles, giving up one run on three hits while Charlotte's Micah Wells earned the win by holding Winthrop to just one hit in the final two innings.
The Eagles rallied back after going 3-0 down in the first inning by scoring three runs of their own in the top of the second inning.
Cody Dolan led off the inning reaching on a throwing error and advanced to second on a walk by
John Menken.
Babe Thomas then hit a double to bring Dolan home and advance Menken to third. Menken crossed the plate on a groundout by
Mark Lowrie and Thomas made it to third before scoring on a groundout to
Michael Patrick to make it 3-3.
Winthrop took the lead in the fourth inning as Menken scored his second run of the game on a RBI double by Lowrie but the 49ers tied it up with one run in the sixth inning.
Charlotte's Logan Sherer hit a walk off single to bring Jordan Hudson and take the game 5-4.
The Eagles will play host to Longwood in its last regular season conference series starting on Thursday night. Games are scheduled for Thursday at 7:15 p.m., Friday at 7:15 p.m. and Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
