Baseball Edged Out by Charleston Southern 6-4

Box Score CHARLESTON, SC- The Winthrop baseball team was swept in its weekend series with Charleston Southern as it dropped Sunday afternoon's game 6-4. Winthrop fell to 22-30 this season and is even in conference action at 12-12 as the Bucs moved to 29-21 and 11-12 in conference play.

Matt Crohan is now 1-4 on the year after coming in to relieve and gave up three runs on two hits. CSU's Denis Buckley earned the win, holding the Eagles to just three hits before reliever Austin Weekley came in and got his 11th save.

Leighton Daniels started off the scoring with a bomb over the fence on just the third pitch of the game for his third home run this season.

The Eagles kept the momentum going and made the score 4-0 with a three-run third inning. Kyle Edwards led off the inning with a single and advanced to third on a single by Tyler Asbill. Edwards scored as Daniels reached on a fielder's choice and an error by the shortstop allowed Asbill to get to second. Cody Dolan then hit a double to centerfield allowing Asbill to score and Daniels to advance to third. Daniels scored on a sacrifice fly by Babe Thomas.

The Buccaneers cut the lead in half, scoring one run in the third and fourth innings, but a four-run seventh inning carried CSU to the win. Bobby Ison had a two RBI bases loaded single followed by a two RBI double by Andrew Widell to give the Bucs all the runs they would need for the series sweep.

The Eagles travel to Charlotte on Tuesday night to take on the 49ers at 6:00 p.m. In the final non conference game of the regular season.
