Baseball Comes Up Short Against USC Upstate, Falls 3-2

Box Score ROCK HILL, SC- Despite going up 1-0 in the second inning, the Winthrop baseball team dropped a 3-2 decision to USC Upstate on Tuesday night. The Eagles drop to 16-19 while the Spartans snapped a six game losing streak and improve to 11-24.

Winthrop's Brock Goodling took the loss, giving up all three runs, as Upstate's Zach Mitchell earned the win allowing two runs on three hits.

The Eagles took the lead in the second inning when Chad Smith came home on a passed ball by catcher Jordan Miller. Smith had doubled and advanced to third on a single by Luke Maldanado.

Goodling came in to relieve in the fifth inning and gave up three walks to load the bases. Travis Shelley then came in but gave up one more walk that allowed Miller to come home and advanced Tyler Lesch to third and Brian Thompson to second. Lesch scored on a wild pitch and Thompson crossed the plate on a groundout by Luke Weber to bring the score to 3-1.

Winthrop got one back in the sixth inning as Kyle Edwards scored on an RBI single by John Menken. Mitchell gave up two walks, one to Edwards and the other to Michael Patrick, to get Edwards in scoring position.  

The Eagles turnaround and host Charlotte in a mid-week matchup on Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. at The Winthrop Ballpark.
