Box Score 2 HIGH POINT, NC- The Winthrop baseball team dropped both games of its double header with High Point first falling 7-4 then 4-2. The Eagles dropped to 18-25 and 9-9 in the conference while the Panthers improved to 23-16 on the season and 11-7 in Big South matchups.
Game 1- High Point 7 Winthrop 4Zach Sightler took the loss for Winthrop, falling to 2-4 on the year and giving up six runs on nine hits. Mike Krumm earned his fourth win of the year, allowing three runs on five hits.
The Panthers took a 4-0 lead after four innings before
Babe Thomas crossed the plate in the fifth inning to prevent the shutout. Thomas hit a double and then came home on an RBI double by
Clay Altman. Thomas scored again in the seventh inning, again doubling and scoring off a sacrifice fly by Altman.
Leighton Daniels and
John Menken scored the last two runs for the Eagles with Daniels scoring in the eighth inning and Menken tacking on one more in the ninth. Daniels singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by T.J. Olesczuk. Menken scored as Daniels hit a single with the bases loaded.
Game 2- High Point 4 Winthrop 2Cody Dolan scored his first run of the season after reaching on fielder's choice and coming home on an RBI double by Olesczuk.
Brad Kaczka made the score 2-1 when he slammed his first home run of the season.
After tying the game 2-2 in the fifth inning, the Panthers took the game with a two run seventh inning.
Joey Strain registered the loss, allowing two runs on six hits while Peter Ripke got the win, giving up both runs on six hits.
The Eagles next matchup is Tuesday when they travel to Charleston to take on the Citadel at 6:00 p.m.
