ROCK HILL, SC- After tying the game in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI double from
Kyle Edwards,
TJ Olesczuk scored in the 13
th inning to lead the Winthrop baseball team past UNC Ashveille 4-3. The Eagles improved to 13-14 on the year and 5-2 in the conference while the Bulldogs fell to 8-17 and 2-5 in conference play.
Olesczuk scored the game-winner in the bottom of the 13
th inning, after being walked.
John Menken bunted but advanced on a throwing error by pitcher Corey Randall that allowed Olesczuk to score.
Right handed pitcher
Jason Driver improved to 3-2 with the win, giving up no runs on three hits. Randall took the loss and falls to 0-3 on the year while giving up three runs on two hits.
The Eagles went up in the second inning as Menken scored on a bases loaded groundout by
Zac Goodno. Menken led off the inning with a single and was advanced by two more singles by
Babe Thomas and
Brad Kaczka.
The Bulldogs tied the game in the top of the seventh inning when Hunter Bryant scored from first on an RBI double from Eli Miller. Asheville scored two more runs in the eighth inning to take the lead 3-1. Bryant hit an RBI double that allowed Robert McIntosh to score and advanced Michael Treadway to third. Treadway scored the second run of the inning on a wild pitch by
Travis Shelley.
Winthrop tied the game in the bottom of the ninth, as Thomas and Kaczka scored on the double from Edwards. Thomas led off the inning with a walk and advanced when Kaczka was hit with a pitch. A wild pitch advanced Thomas and Edwards to second and third where they were brought home to bring the game to 3-3 heading into extra innings.
This weekend's conference series will continue Sunday with a doubleheader set to start at 1:00 p.m. at The Winthrop Ballpark.
