Michael Patrick slammed a three run homer in the second inning to lead the Winthrop baseball team to a 3-1 upset over thirteenth ranked North Carolina Wednesday night.
Zach Sightler pitched seven innings to earn the win for the Eagles and improved to 2-1 on the year, while giving up one run on seven hits.
Josh Strong came in to relieve and only gave up two hits and no runs in his 3.2 innings and struck out the last batter of the game to earn his second save of the year. North Carolina's Luis Paula took the loss, his third of this season, giving up all three runs and four hits.
Josh Strong came on in relief in the sixth inning and pitched 3.2 innings of two-hit and no run baseball to earn his second save. He struck out the final Tar Heel to end the game.
North Carolina had its only lead of the night in the first inning when Adam Pate scored on a groundout by Tom Zengel. Pate had walked, stole second and advanced to third on a bases loaded walk.
Brad Kaczka and
Clif Bryant were both brought home on the homer from Patrick. Kaczka led off the second inning with a double and Bryant got on base on a walk.
Winthrop will hosts a conference series for the first time this season against UNC Ashville this weekend at The Winthrop Ballpark. Game times are set for Friday at 6:00 p.m., Saturday at 3:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
