Baseball Hosts Charlotte Tuesday Before Traveling to Chapel Hill on Wednesday

ROCK HILL, SC- The Winthrop baseball teams will host Charlotte Tuesday night at the Winthrop Ballpark before traveling to Chapel Hill to take on #13 North Carolina on Wednesday. Game time for both games is 6:00 p.m.

Winthrop (11-13, 4-2) hopes to add more wins to its resume this week as it takes on Charlotte and the nationally ranked Tar Heels. Junior outfielder TJ Olesczuk hit .500 last week to bring his season batting average to a team-leading .432. Olesczuk ranks in the top 35 nationally in batting average and leads the team with 32 hits, 11 of them doubles. Senior Leighton Daniels is currently on a five game hitting streak and includes seven hits, three runs batted in and five runs scored over that stretch.

Charlotte (3-16-1, 0-9) is trying to snap a six game losing streak and earn its first road victory of the year. Junior Derek Gallello leads the 49ers in batting average at .302 while freshman Logan Serer has a team high of 21 hits and nine RBI. Charlotte head coach Loren Hibbs is in his 22nd year at the helm and has earned a record of 672-526-4.

The Tar Heels are hoping to bounce back from a disappointing conference series with Georgia Tech last weekend as they dropped two out of three games at home. Freshman Wood Myers (.309) and senior Tom Zengel (.406) have led the Tar Heels' offense so far this season, combining for 34 hits, 21 RBIs and 20 runs. North Carolina is led by head coach Mike Fox who is in his 16th year at his alma mater, where he has earned a record of 709-282-1 and currently ranks first among active coaches in winning percentage.
