scored 15 points to lead Winthrop to a 51-43 Big South Conference victory over Presbyterian College on Saturday afternoon at the Templeton Center.
With its third straight win, Winthrop gained a season sweep of PC and maintains its hold on first place in the Big South. The Eagles improve to 16-6 overall and 10-3 in the league, while PC falls 5-17 overall and 3-10 in the league. The 51 points by Winthrop was its lowest offensive output of the year and the 43 points by PC were the fewest allowed this season by the Eagles.
"Every win is beautiful in its own way," said Winthrop head coach.
Kevin Cook about the low-scoring affair. "I told the team if they want to play fast, we will play fast. If they want to slow it down, we can play a number of styles and be successful. That's the mark of a good team."
After missing the two previous games with the flu, Nunn was back in the starting lineup on Saturday and made her presence felt on both ends of the court. After scoring five points and getting one rebound in the first half, she was big on the offensive and defensive glass in the second period as she grabbed 12 more rebounds.
McClanahan scored 11 of her game-high 15 points in the final half as she inched closer to the Big South's all-time scoring mark. She now needs 89 more points to pass former Liberty standout Elena Kisseleva's record of 2,154 career points.
"We welcomed Schaquilla back and she picked right up with another double-double, and Dequesha iced it there at the end for us nailing those free throws," said Cook. "We accomplished what we came here to do and that's win a ball game."
After taking a 21-17 halftime lead, McClanahan, Nunn and
Erica Williams gave the Eagles some breathing room in the first seven minutes of the second half when Winthrop went on a 15-4 run to take a 15-point lead at 38-23, its largest lead of the game. McClanahan connected on a three-pointer to give Winthrop a 26-19 lead at the 18:14 mark, and then Nunn scored on back-to-back put backs and a layup to make it a 32-23. Williams scored on an inside move and a 12-foot baseline jumper, and McClanahan ended the run with a layup to make it 38-23 with 12:04 remaining.
After connecting on just three field goals in the first 11:47 of the final period, PC began to cut into Winthrop's lead. Keyonna Allen scored six straight points over a three-minute to make it a 42-31 game. Sherece Smith made it a single digit deficit when she swished a 15-foot jumper with just over four minutes left. Rebecca Walker then drained a three ball to cut Winthrop's lead to six points at 42-36 at the 3:33 mark, but Nunn answered with a layup and PC would get no closer than five points the rest of the way.Winthrop connected on seven of eight free throws in the final 1:26 to ice the game.
