ROCK HILL, SC—The Winthrop men's soccer team is tied for first nationally in scoring and ranked among other statistical categories for games through Sept. 29.
Winthrop is coming off a week in which it scored a combined six goals with a 1-0 at UNC Greensboro and a 5-1 win at the Virginia Military Institute to increase its goals per game average to a national leading 2.88. Winthrop is tied with Dayton and Delaware for the top scoring offenses in the nation.
Despite playing seven of its eight games on the road this season, Winthrop has been able to build a solid chemistry offensively and have 23 goals in eight games.
As a team, the Eagles also rank in the Top 5 nationally in points per game (8.5, 2
nd), Total Goals (23, 3
rd), Winning percentage (0.938, 3
rd), assists per game (2.75, 3
rd), total assists (22, 5
th) and total points (68, 5
th).
Winthrop has had 12 different players find the back of the net this season, but no more than freshman
Max Hasenstab who leads the team with six goals, which ties him for 13
th nationally.
He is ranked sixth in the country in total points with 17 and seventh in points per game at 2.13. He is also 17
th in the nation in goals per game at 0.75. Senior
Achille Obougou broke into the Top 50 goal scorers in the nation as he now has four on the year and is ranked 48
th.
The defense has posted three shutouts this season and holds a 0.73 goals against average which ranks 30
th. Junior
Guilherme Avelar has been a big part defensively as he is ranked 18
th nationally in save percentage (0.854). His goals against average of 0.777 ranks 38
th nationally and he's 33
rd in total saves with 35.
