Taylor Coleman each scored a goal to boost the Winthrop women's soccer team past Davidson 2-1 Friday night.
The game was filled with action from the start with
Krystyna Freda taking her first shot of the game just 20 seconds after kick-off. Davidson saw a great opportunity when sophomore Natalie Spach hit a cross into the box. Forward Julia Singley collided with defender
Ashley Herndon, but managed to get a touch on the ball which hit the post. The first half ended with Freda receiving a through ball and taking a shot from 18 yards out on an open net, however the shot went high.
Taylor Coleman opened up the scoring in the second half after she ripped a shot from 25 yards out past goalkeeper Rachel Locke. A minute later, a wide open Freda would receive a cross at the penalty kick mark from
Olivia Costello and took a shot that was just off target. Winthrop kept the pressure on after defender
Lauren Watts took a shot inside the 18 yard box that resulted in a corner kick. The Wildcats tied the game in the 56
th minute when
Taylor Coleman brought down Stephanie Piperno inside the box. Sophomore Dani Johnson took the resulting penalty kick and put it low past Henderson. Davidson looked to gain the lead three minutes later when Sarah Tuggle had a one on one with Henderson. Tuggle tried slotting it low but Henderson got down and made the save. With 20 minutes left in the game, freshman
Macey Bosley played a through ball to
Grace Radler who was sprinting down the sideline. Radler dribbled down to the sideline and crossed the ball into the box where Freda took a one touch finish passed Locke. Davidson did not go down without a fight as Dani Johnson had a hard one touch shot from 6 yards out. Henderson managed to hold on to the ball and secure the victory for the Lady Eagles. Winthrop is now 4-1 and undefeated at home, while Davidson falls to 0-4-3.
Women's soccer travels to Charleston to take on the Citadel Wednesday afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
