ROCK HILL, SC—Winthrop head men's soccer coach
Rich Posipanko announced the addition of Guilherme Avelar for the 2013 season.
Avelar, a 6-1 goalkeeper out of Sao Paulo, Brazil is transferring from Peninsula Junior College in Port Angeles, WA where he was a 2012 Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) selection. He recorded 11 shutouts on the year and helped his team to an NWAACA championship and final NJCAA ranking of 9
th after a 22-1-1 record.
"The goalkeeping position was one of our major recruiting concerns this year since we graduated three senior goalkeepers," said Posipanko. "By adding Guilherme to the mix, we feel it will create a very a competitive atmosphere that will help all goalkeepers to push each other and challenge for the starting job. We are looking for this group of new goalkeepers to improve on the success of the goalkeepers from past years, which was at a high level."
Avelar will be in the mix for the starting goalkeeper job along with newcomers Hector Fernandez, Fabian Broich and Kevin Duncan.
Winthrop finished the 2012 season ranked in three national polls and made it to the round of 32 in the NCAA College Cup. It was the Eagles fifth NCAA appearance in the past 11 years.
