ROCK HILL, SC -- Stephen Wallace's first career home run helped put the Eagles out to an early lead, but Wofford battled back scoring sixth unanswered en route to a 7-3 win over Winthrop Tuesday night at Fluor Field in Greenville.
Winthrop plated single runs in three consecutive innings to take an early lead, however, the Terriers began to chip away at the lead in the fourth. With the 3-3 lock in the sixth, Wofford opened the game up with a four run outburst to put the Terriers up 7-3. Alec Paradowski, Josh Hyman, Seth Neely, and Clark Wise all singled and came around to score in the inning. The Terrier bullpen managed to hold the Eagles scoreless in five innings of relief to secure the 7-3 win for Wofford.
Tuesday's loss evens the season series with Wofford at 1-1 and drops Winthrop to 15-29 on the season while the Terriers improve their record to 19-28. The Eagles jump back into action on Wednesday with a 6:00 p.m. matchup with Furman (22-18) in Greenville, SC. Winthrop defeated the Paladins 13-4 earlier this season at The Winthrop Ballpark.
Wofford got things rolling in the first as the Terriers managed to manufacture a run off of Eagle's starter Sam Kmiec. After reaching on a walk, Demetrius Jennings was ushered up to second on a sacrifice bunt then promptly stole third base. The next batter, Hyman , then drove a fly ball to right field allowing Jennings to tag and score giving the Terriers an early 1-0 lead.
The Eagles answered back in the top of the second when third baseman Stephen Wallace launched his first career home run over the wall in left center to tie the game at 1-1. The Eagles jumped on top in the third with
Jace Whitley's RBI double scoring Kyle Edwards to put Winthrop up 2-1. Winthrop put another run up on the board in the fourth on Edwards' RBI single scoring Wallace from second to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead.
Wofford came roaring back in the fourth with a pair of RBI singles from Matt Ramsay and Wise to knot the game up at 3-3. After a scoreless fifth inning, the Terriers jumped on Winthrop reliever
Josh Strong (2-1) for four runs on four hits. Three straight singles from Paradowski, Hyman, and Neely set the table Wise who roped a single to left field that got under the glove of the left fielder allowing Wise to speed all the way around and score giving the Terriers a 7-3 lead.
Winthrop threatened in the ninth with the bases loaded with just one out, however, Wofford closer Eric Eck worked out of the jam getting pinch hitter
Chad Smith to ground into the 5-4-3 double play to lock up the 7-3 win for the Terriers.
Wallace, Whitley and Edwards all collected a pair of hits and an RBI in the game for the Eagles. As a team, Winthrop managed to rack up nine hits, however, 11 base runners were left stranded. Reliever Jared Keels had a strong showing for the Eagles throwing two scoreless innings of no-hit baseball while striking out three.
