ROCK HILL, SC -- The Winthrop baseball team jumps back into action with a two-game road trip to Greenville, SC where the Eagles are set for games with Wofford on Tuesday and Furman on Wednesday.
The Eagles look to build on a 10-4 record in midweek games with a pair of games in Greenville, SC this week. Winthrop will suit up for a Tuesday night matchup with Wofford at Fluor Field (home of the Greenville Drive – Boston Red Class A Affiliate) at 6:00 p.m. The Eagles then travel eight miles down the road to Furman University for a 6:00 p.m. ballgame on Wednesday night.
Last time in action, the Eagles fell to the Wake Forest Demon Deacons last Tuesday night at The Winthrop Ballpark. First baseman
Clay Altman managed to score a pair of runs in the game however, Winthrop wasn't able to battle back from an early 5-0 deficit as the Demon Deacons went on to win the game 10-2. The Eagles got strong support out of the bullpen from right-hander Jared Keels who pitched two scoreless innings of one-hit relief while senior
Eric Ruth blanked Wake in the ninth while striking out one.
Winthrop heads to Greenville with a 15-28 (3-12 Big South) record on the season. The Eagles look to complete the season sweep of Wofford who comes into the game with carrying an 18-28 record including 8-15 in the Southern Conference. Winthrop is 17-6 against the Terriers all-time including the Eagles' 6-1 win at The Winthrop Ballpark earlier this season. Wofford carries a two-game winning streak into the game with back-to-back wins over Davidson over the weekend.
Josh Hyman continues to lead the way offensively for the Terriers ranking first on the team in most offensive categories including batting average (.347), runs (37), doubles (12), home runs (5), RBI's (31), and stolen bases (23). Clark Wise and Seth Neely have hit the well for Wofford as well hitting .331 and .326 respectively. As a team, the Terriers are hitting .268 on the season while scoring 5.2 runs per game.
Wofford will be sending sophomore right-hander Connell Anderson (0-3) to the mound against the Eagles. Anderson maintains an 8.53 ERA in 19 innings with 11 strikeouts and 18 walks this season. Anderson allowed one hit and struck out one in .1 innings of relief against the Eagles earlier this season. As a staff, the Terriers hold a 5.63 ERA while allowing opposing hitters a .287 batting average.
After Tuesday night's game at Fluor Field, the Eagles head over to Furman for a 6:00 p.m. game on Wednesday at the Latham Baseball Stadium. Furman, 22-18 (9-13 Southern Conference), come into the game off a 14-10 win over The Citadel in Greenville over the weekend. The Eagles are 20-2 (10-1 at Furman) all-time including Winthrop's 13-4 win on April 10
th at The Winthrop Ballpark.
Senior Taylor Johnson is at the top of most offensive categories for the Paladins including batting average (.318), runs (34), doubles (13), home runs (8), RBI's (39), and slugging percentage (.532). As a team, Furman is hitting a solid .281 on the season while scoring 5.8 runs per game. The Paladin pitching staff has allowed hitters a .277 batting average this season while holding a 4.76 team ERA.
Winthrop is looking for its fourth and fifth season sweep of non-conference teams this season. The Eagles have completed two-game sweeps over Davidson, Charlotte, and East Tennessee State so far this year.
Winthrop's junior outfielder Cody Dolan continues to put together a solid season at the plate. Dolan leads the Eagles with a .318 batting average, 25 runs scored, 11 doubles, 3 home runs, and a .453 slugging percentage.

Josh Strong (1.54 ERA),
Mitchell Knox (2.83 ERA), and
Steven Howell (5.64 ERA) have been mainstays out of the bullpen for the Eagles this season. The Winthrop bullpen maintains a 3.05 ERA this season while holding hitters to a .243 batting average.
